“Generations Under the Sun: Celebrating Filipino Heritage in Canada”
Title: Inday
Artist: Mildred Grace German
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Size: 16" x 24" x .5"
Artist Statement:
Inday is the song of a mother who lost her daughter during the Balangiga Massacre by the USA. The distraught mother only found her child's toy doll while the village burns during the massacre.
In humiliation for the U.S. army’s “single worst defeat” in the annals of their war history, General Jacob Smith retaliated and massacred the people of Samar. This remains an unknown fact about the Waray People to the present-day Philippines. The Battle of Balangiga and Balangiga Massacre is never forgotten! The stories of the Waray People’s courage, sacrifice, heroism and wisdom must be told, written and retold.
Historical events like this has been a plague in the Philippines under colonial rule. With this, it is no surprising that the impacts of past colonization still resonate to us to present, with the forced migration of over 10 million Filipinos to over 156 countries around the globe. This forced migration is the result of the ongoing colonialism of the Philippines for 500 years now.

GENERATIONS UNDER THE SUN
July 13 - August 17, 2019 Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) Open Gallery
The Philippines is known as the Pearl of the Orient Seas. It is a country rich in natural wonders, fine white sand beaches, and precious underwater treasures. Its culture and people reflect the warmth of its tropical waters and the vibrant colors of its islands.
Through the years, many Filipinos have made Canada their home.
They have shared their unique heritage as a way of reconnecting with the past and inspiring the future. In 2018, Filipino Canadians across the country celebrated the declaration of the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month.
Generations Under The Sun is a collaborative project between first, second, and third generation Filipino Canadians. It is a visual celebration of Filipino heritage and diversity in Canada, and an authentic expression of the light-hearted spirit and family-centered culture of the Filipino people presented by the Filipino Canadian Association of Kamloops.
The exhibition features Filipino heritage pieces by Felian Cabael, Lester Coloma, Rose Cortez, Noisettes Crisostomo, Allan Florendo, Charlie Frenal, Czarina Frenal, Mildred German, Kiana Hipolito, Kim Laforteza, Anya Lavina, Clara Lavina, Bryan Madera, Esmie Gayo McLaren, and Jerome Rodil.
